A couple of days ago we woke up to a beautiful frosty, mist shrouded morning which faded from ice to fire when the morning sun blazed its way across the Downs.
This is the time of year when you can feel Spring in the air, tantalisingly close, and I start to feel impatient for some warmer weather so I can get outside and start planting.
I have big plans for our little garden and am probably going to have to downscale a bit in order to fit everything in. The good thing about my experience of inner city container gardening is that I can use space effectively to cram as much green in as possible and I’ll certainly also be growing lots in pots. Most of my plants have survived the winter despite being hiked from a nicely sheltered patio garden to a blustery, exposed little plot which gets hit directly by the icy blasts that rush in from the Low Weald.
I’ve just had a couple of seed deliveries and will be setting up the seed trays before too long. It’s all very exciting!
Finally, incase you haven’t spotted the announcements elsewhere, Danielle will be hosting the February Blog Party on a topic which is close to all our hearts, ‘Gems from the Herbal Library’. All of us herby bloggers share a love of words as well as a love of nature so this promises to be a great topic and I’m sure we’ll all discover a new treasure to add to our collections. Read all about it in her post here.
As you can see, I’m not the only one who appreciates herb books in our household.
Such enchanting pictures…truly mystical looking (I am now pondering whether the word derives from scenes such as these!). So exciting that spring is around the corner, isn’t it? Our first year in Vermont (which was our first year not living in the city and actually having a garden), we went so overboard with what we grew! It was just so exciting to have the space, and we ended up with such a funny hodge podge combo of plants, but not enough to get much from any one thing. This year, we are trying to simplify and grow enough of each plant to actually get a good harvest. Each year is a great learning experience!
Lots of love,
D

Yes I can definitely relate to that. We still have fairly limited space so it’s hard to decide what to prioritise. I’ve spend so long day dreaming of plants I’d like to grow that my list is already out of hand and growing all the time!
I’d love to see your garden if you ever fancy posting about it.
love to you xx

What is that wall/boardwalk sort of thing, boardering the woods in the second picture, Lucinda? I tried to enlarge it and still wasn’t quite certain. I love misty weather, and your pictures capture the mood and spirit of such morning well xx Ahhh Serenity and I are reading the same book! My husband just gave me that Matthew Wood book as part of my anniversary present! We will have to compare notes, Serenity! My Patrick Star, aka Paddy, is standing on my copy as we speak:)
Noticed in your picture that some of your seeds were from Suffolk Seeds, so went and looked at their website. I hope they ship to the U.S. as I have been wanting Devil’s Bit Scabious for awhile! Thank you for sharing with your pictures and words:) big hugs! xx

Hi Leslie, it’s actually a hawthorn hedge bordering the track running down between the field and the trees. It was cut back in the Autumn and hasn’t started to grow yet so looks quite boxy. I was uploading so many pictures I decided to save them as small so as to save a bit of space which is probably why it doesn’t enlarge much.
Serenity does have excellent taste in books, you’d never catch such a discerning kitty snoozing on pulp fiction!!
Let me know if Suffolk herbs wont ship to you. A pack of seeds is so light I’d be happy to send it on, though I imagine US customs are tight on such things!
Hugs to you xxx

Love black cats, so magical….
Also love the misty, frosty morning images, so pretty.
I grow many herbs and use as many as I can in recipes.
I also use them medicinally and have found them to be most beneficial…….
Reading this post, I think we live quite close to each other……just a guess.

I too love black cats, Serenity is definitely the most sensitive to energy of all our cats. She’s always around when I’m making medicines or doing healing.
Take care xx

As in farm track, like a little unpaved road. Is that an English-ism? xx
