A whole year has rolled round since Zen Kitty’s last autumn retreat, once again leaving me, Witch’s Kitty, to wish you a happy Samhain.
Whilst Zen Kitty spends most of her time reclining in meditative equipoise, we familiars have a busier life, ensuring that the Hawthorn syrup doesn’t bubble over, that the chamomile tea is perfectly brewed and observing the humans’ haphazard gardening attempts with a disapproving eye.
Above all though, our task is to remind them continually about the whisper of magic that underpins all life, from the quivering leaves, to the scurrying squirrel to the sound of their heartbeats as I lie on their chests in the early morning. Humans tend to believe that magic is something they do, another thing to control in this, at times frighteningly confusing, life. But we know, and serve as constant reminders to them, that magic is what you are, not what you do. It is the very fabric that you are woven from and you can no more be apart from it than you can from your own breath.
Remember this as the Celtic year draws to a close and the New Year begins, first with the darkness of winter when we sow our intents and wishes, then into the brightness of spring, when all things burst forth in wonderment.
Wishing you a most magical and happy Hallowe’en!
Lucinda,
The last image is wonderful……it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up 🙂
Indeed short days to come………time to rest……to feed our inner needs.
I love the winter. Time to view natures structures, as the leaves tumble from the branches, exposing the heart of the trees.
I don’t think I will ever tire of your posts. I always feel so connected to them.
You are one very magical girl 🙂

Thank you so much Cheryl, you are so kind and generous with your words. Witch’s kitty is curled up on the back of the sofa next to my head overseeing this as I type. She is so special and connected. She sits by me whenever I am making medicines and has even come out down the lane harvesting with me before now. She really is so dear to me.
I’m so glad to hear you love winter too, I sometimes feel like the only person I know who does. I love the subtlety of the colours of the landscape and I so agree that it’s a wonderful time for appreciating a different aspect of the nature of trees.
Much love to you and Nella x

Witch’s kitty is completely ravishing with that sleek black fur (do I detect a slight auburn hue?) and green eyes. What’s her name? She looks so mystical in the first photo – and very saucy in the second 🙂 Such beautiful words to think on as the year renews itself. I hope you had a wonderful Halloween and happy Samhain today! May this year hold much bounty and happiness for you and yours 🙂
XOXO

Yes she is rather ravishing isn’t she! She looks completely jet black in most lights but when the sun shines on her fur it gets this wonderful red glow through it. Sometimes when it’s a bit dark all you can see are these great green eyes staring out at you! Serenity is her name and it suits her temperament well.
i hope you too have a wonderful year full of gifts and magic and surprises.

I’m very lucky to have her. I think my recipes would probably all turn out wrong if it wasn’t for her guidance. How are your brood doing? Am I right in thinking you have 12 now with all the kittens!?! xxxxx

Your gorgeous kitty is so like mine! Even down to the auburn tinge beneath the jet black fur. She deserves a post, you’ll have to come have a look 🙂
Love what you have to say about magic .. its all around us and inside us all the time but we’ve just tuned it out.
I love the hunkering down and cosying up and battening the hatches for winter. I never enjoyed winter until the last few years, but now I find that skeletal tree silhouettes and glorious sunsets and frost and everything else are possibly more beautiful than everything that precedes them. And the dark comes like a comforting blanket and welcome rest this year. I have always had a strong hibernation instinct!

Ooo excellent. I love cat posts! Sometimes I think I should do a blog dedicated entirely to the cats… but then I worry that I may be obsessed. Even the vet accused me of being a crazy cat lady. 🙂
I so agree with what you say about winter, beautifully put.
